This year's Sealed Bid Art Auction features a beautiful two-piece studio glass sculpture created by Marvin Lipofsky and generously gifted to Petals & Paintings at Krannert Art Museum in the months before his passing on January 15, 2016.

The New York Times calls Lipofsky "a founder of the studio-glass movement, which took blown glass from the realm of interior decoration and functionality and showed its potential as a fine-arts medium." The artist earned his BFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1962. From there he studied glass under Harvey Littleton at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, later earning his MFA from the University of California at Berkeley in 1964. He then remained at Berkeley to create a university-level glass-blowing program to teach the art form he loved.

Over the next decades, Lipofsky continued to teach and to develop his art, including frequent international travel to collaborate with glass artists in Italy, Czech Republic, Russia and Germany. Thüringen Forest Flowers was the result of one such collaboration with artists at Farblaschutte in Lauscha, Germany.

Visitors to the museum may be familiar with Lipofsky's work. The artist's Meisenthal #8 (1992-93) and SF Tacoma Group #3 (2006-2007, pictured below) were part of the 2012 exhibition Fifty Years: Contemporary American Glass from Illinois Collections at Krannert Art Museum, and SF Tacoma Group #3 was a featured artwork for that year's Petals & Paintings exhibition.

The museum is honored to feature Marvin Lipofsky's work and to recognize his significant contribution to American contemporary studio glass.
