Louise Bourgeois: The Early Work
April 26 through August 4, 2002
Louise Bourgeois is now internationally recognized as one of the most important 20th century American artists, yet she has spent over half of her career in relative obscurity.  Beginning in the 1940's, shortly after moving to New York City, Bourgeois produced her first mature, highly original works.  Her pieces were included in several group exhibitions with the Abstract Expressionists, and she was associated with many avant-garde artists in New York, including exiled European Surrealists and Dadaists.  Born in Paris in 1911, Bourgeois is among the few living representatives of that New York generation.  She is still actively involved in the international art scene and continues to produce new works in her own distinctive vocabulary charged with the psychological and symbolic. Louise Bourgeois: The Early Work presents a carefully chosen selection of the work that she produced during the 1940s and 1950s.  Most of the exhibited works are from the artist's personal collection and from private collections in the United States.  Krannert Art Museum is proud to be the organizer of the most comprehensive museum exhibition of Louise Bourgeois' early work to be shown in the United States.

Lipchitz and the Avant-Garde: From Paris to New York
September 22, 2001 through January 6, 2002
Tracing the remarkable career of the pioneering cubist sculptor, Jacques Lipchitz, this exhibition profiles a significant recent donation of sculptures to Krannert Art Museum and places Lipchitz within the context of his friends and contemporaries: Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Amedeo Modigliani, and Diego Rivera. The exhibition highlights the range of the artist's career from its early days, through cubism and portraiture, to his monumental postwar expressionism. The exhibition includes important loans from major institutions and features 45 sculptures, and 40 drawings and paintings, representing the major themes and influences that occupied Lipchitz before World War II in Paris and Spain, and during his time in New York and later in Italy.

Rivers of Spirit: Art Women in the African Diaspora
June 2 through January, 2001
The Museum, in partnership with the University of Illinois Afro-American Studies Program and the Center for African Studies, organized an international exhibition featuring the works of well-known and emerging women artists from North America and Africa . The show was guest curated by Isobel Neal and Robin Chandler, working in close conjunction with KAM staff. On opening reception was hosted in conjunction with a related conference, "Black Women in Africa and the African Diaspora: Identity, Culture, and Politics." Programming included an African dance and music performance, three separate moderated panel discussions and slide shows led by local African-American women artists, three hands-on workshops on Saturdays for high school students, and guided tours. The exhibition was originally scheduled to close after two months; it was extended due to popular demand and was on display until January 7, 2001.

Wit and Wine: A New Look at Ancient Iranian Ceramics from the Arthur M. Sackler Foundation
July 14 through December 17, 2000
This travelling exhibition featured 45 spectacular pieces of ancient Iranian pottery. These beautiful, technically sophisticated and often amusing ceramics mark a rich yet little known tradition that equals pre-Columbian American, Chinese, and Greek achievements. KAM also mounted a companion exhibition featuring related ceramics and bronzes from the Museum's own collection. Programming included "Pots in Perspective," an informal panel discussion led by Trudi Kawami from the Sackler Foundation with UIUC faculty, guided gallery talks, and a hands-on ceramics workshop for throwing and glazing pots in the Iranian style.
