Lipchitz and the Avant-Garde: From Paris to New York

Exhibition

On view
Sep 22, 2001 to Jan 6, 2002

Tracing the remarkable career of the pioneering cubist sculptor, Jacques Lipchitz, this exhibition profiles a significant recent donation of sculptures to Krannert Art Museum and places Lipchitz within the context of his friends and contemporaries: Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Amedeo Modigliani, and Diego Rivera.

The exhibition highlights the range of the artist's career from its early days, through cubism and portraiture, to his monumental postwar expressionism. The exhibition includes important loans from major institutions and features 45 sculptures, and 40 drawings and paintings, representing the major themes and influences that occupied Lipchitz before World War II in Paris and Spain, and during his time in New York and later in Italy.
