About the Speaker
Dede Fairchild Ruggles holds the Debra Mitchell Chair in Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and holds affiliated appointments in Art History, Architecture, Medieval Studies, Spanish & Portuguese Studies, Gender & Women’s Studies, Women & Gender in Global Perspectives, the Center for South Asian and Middle East Studies, and the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory.
She has held grants and fellowships from the National Gallery of Art, Dumbarton Oaks, the Getty, and the NEH, among others. She is the author of two award-winning books on Islamic landscape history (Gardens, Landscape, and Vision in the Palaces of Islamic Spain, 2000; and Islamic Gardens and Landscapes, 2007), as well as eleven other authored, edited, and co-edited volumes on landscape history, cultural heritage, women’s arts patronage, and Islamic art and architectural history.
