May I book a private event at the museum?

Unfortunately, due to insurance restrictions and general campus policy, the museum does not offer itself as a venue for weddings or other private events.

May I use images or graphics from the KAM website?

Materials accessed via this website are provided for personal and/or scholarly use only. Users are responsible for obtaining any copyright permissions that may be required for their own further uses of that material. Requestors seeking permission may initially contact kam-collections@illinois.edu. For more information about fair use please refer to the College Art Association Code of Best Practices in Fair Use in the Visual Arts.

How does KAM manage image rights and permissions for art in the permanent collection?

The museum regularly manages image requests from researchers, institutions, and students. When possible, it is Krannert Art Museum's policy to provide digital images of works of art in the permanent collection for educational and research purposes as well as some publications and media uses. The museum does not charge for this service.

Details on how to make a request online are located on the Image Requests page.

How do I purchase a KAM exhibition catalogue?

Krannert Art Museum produces high quality catalogues for major exhibitions. A list of available catalogues can be found on our Publications page.

In addition to the titles listed, the museum often keeps a small supply of art catalogues on hand for purchase by visitors. To see whether a catalogue is available for purchase on site, please email Publications Manager Kathryn Koca Polite.

How do I reach a member of the museum staff?

Krannert Art Museum staff member information is located on our Staff page. Administration, Collections & Exhibition Management, Curatorial, Development, Education, and Security & Facilities staff can be reached by clicking the "Contact" links beneath each name and title. Automated information on Krannert Art Museum is also available by telephone at 217 333 1861.

Does the museum consider artist submissions and exhibition proposals?

As the academic art museum at the University of Illinois, the museum plans its exhibition program well in advance and is driven largely by in-depth research by KAM's curatorial team. Krannert Art Museum exhibitions promote projects that create dynamic curricular connections and participatory forms of engagement, explore timely and compelling issues of culture and society in historical and contemporary contexts, encourage innovative and integrated forms of teaching and learning, and promote global perspectives.

While Krannert Art Museum reviews all inquiries that come through our website, we do not guarantee a response to solicitations. For information on upcoming exhibitions, please visit the Exhibitions pages. For information on university partnerships and teaching at KAM, please visit the Academic Engagement pages.

We are planning a trip to KAM, how do we request a tour?

Krannert Art Museum tours are designed to provide in-depth explorations of particular galleries and works of art within them. There is no charge for guided tours, which can be booked for university classes, schools, and groups of 8 or more who would like a docent or tour guide. Groups of 7 or fewer may take a self-guided tour anytime the museum is open. More information can be found on the Plan a Tour page.

What is the cost of admission to the museum?

Krannert Art Museum is free and open to the public, thanks to the generous donations of our annual members, the Friends of Krannert Art Museum.

Free-will donations are accepted in a donation box at the main entrance to the museum or you can give online at kam.illinois.edu/contribute.

If you would like to help keep KAM free and open to all, please feel free to donate an amount you can afford at the entrance to the museum.

How do I become a museum member?

When you become a member of Krannert Art Museum, you experience the satisfaction of knowing that your contribution supports extraordinary exhibitions and educational programs throughout the year. Visit our Annual Membership page to learn more.

We had a lovely visit to KAM and would like to support the museum’s work. What different ways can we give?

Krannert Art Museum relies on the generosity of alumni, corporate partners, foundation allies, and friends who give in a variety of ways, from annual membership to program support, foundation contributions, or gifts of art. More information on the many ways to give can be found at the "Support" link in the top menu.

Is the museum's permanent art collection searchable online?

Yes. KAM offers a few ways to learn about the art collection. Explore the Collection offers access to a broader range of works through our online collection database. On that page, simply click "Search our collection by..." at the top of the page and type your search terms, then press Go. To narrow a broad search or to search by specific categories in the database, use the Advanced Search tool.

Does KAM assist with art appraisals? How do I get my work of art authenticated and valued?

Krannert Art Museum curators are experts in determining an object's historic importance, quality, and condition. But many professional codes of ethics prohibit museum staff from providing monetary appraisals, and the Tax Reform Act of 1984 specifically bars museums and other donee organizations from providing appraisals for tax-deductible donations. Consequently, the museum recommends that you contact a qualified appraiser of art and artifacts in order to determine an object’s value for tax, insurance, or other purposes. Fortunately there are a number of websites that can help you find an accredited appraiser.  These also explain the appraisal process in detail. Potential donors may also want to refer to IRS Publication 561, which explains the federal tax guidelines for determining the fair market value of a donation.

Where is the nearest available parking?

Parking is available in the museum lot at the corner of Peabody Drive and Sixth Street.

Is sketching allowed in the galleries?

Sketching is not only allowed, it is encouraged! At KAM, we often have artists and students drawing inspiration from the artwork on view. We simply ask visitors to please use pencil and to keep in mind that tour groups and visitors may be viewing the same gallery or artwork during their time here.

Once your sketch is complete, we invite you to share it with us via the museum's Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter accounts. Links to follow KAM on social media are at the bottom the page.

Where is the accessible entrance?

The Kinkead Pavilion entrance on Sixth Street (pictured above) is wheelchair accessible, with automated doors at ground level. There is also a ramp entrance on the north side of the School of Art & Design. Full information on accessibility is available on the Accessibility page.

Are service animals allowed at KAM?

Service animals are permitted in all public areas of the university, including the galleries at Krannert Art Museum. The ADA stipulates that service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless these devices interfere with the service animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective controls.

Please see the "Service Animals" section of our Accessibility page for more information and links to campus accessibility resources.

May I take photographs at the museum?

Unless otherwise posted, photography and videography of artwork on view is allowed, using a handheld camera, without flash, for personal or educational use only. Artwork on loan to the museum may not be photographed without express written permission. We do restrict the size of camera bags and do not allow tripods in the museum, to keep works of art from accidental damage. But you are free to bring your handheld camera or mobile device into the museum.

Please note: All professional photography and videography and all coursework-related photography and videography must be scheduled in advance with KAM staff. Please contact Julia Nucci Kelly, Assistant Director of Marketing & Communications via the Contact form to schedule a time.
