An essential defining characteristic of architecture becomes a pejorative when used to describe people. The relationships between the outside of a building and its interior, and between some- one's public face and the workings of his/her mind, were the subject of this gathering of recent art. Gender roles, racial stereotypes, architectural foils, and assumptions of all kinds came into play in this investigation.

This multimedia exhibition explores the interdisciplinary question of the façade: the meanings and questions it raises in art, architecture and personality theory. The exhibition presents the work of 21 artists who work in film, photography, performance, painting and sculpture.
Programming involves the School of Art and Design, practitioners, historians and theorists, the departments of Japanese studies, psychology, philosophy, the medical school and the theater department. Faculty members from these fields have been asked to write 1-2 page essays about the concept of facades – the meanings, functions, designs and constructions of them from the perspective of their own area of expertise. These handouts will be available in the galleries for visitors.
In addition the curators have authored an illustrated brochure that includes the essay "Curators Converse" to document the exhibition and explore the issues it encompasses.

Guest Curators: Judith Hoos Fox and Ginger Gregg Duggan
Judith Hoos Fox is currently Visiting Curator at Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion after spending 19 years at the Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley College, and holding curatorial positions at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; and the Harvard University Art Museums. Her recent projects include the group exhibitions OVER + OVER: A Passion for Process, Pattern Language: Clothing as Communicator, and Branded and On Display.
Ginger Gregg Duggan is an independent curator and founder of Remote Control Curatorial, LLC. She has held curatorial posts at the Bellevue Art Museum in Seattle and the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale. Recent projects include Fashion: The Greatest Show on Earth, a major multimedia exhibition on fashion shows as performance art, OVER + OVER: A Passion for Process, and Branded and On Display. Duggan teaches and writes on contemporary art.
