For this Sudden Sound concert, award-winning composer Renée Baker presents ICHOR BLACK, based on the opera The Baldwin Chronicles: Negro Ideologies.
Establishing a wide berth for traditional and experimental creative music, Renée Baker’s Quadtych—Renée Baker (violin, viola), Karl E. H. Siegfried (bass), William Porter (cello), and Bruce Nelson (vibes, percussion)—expresses the polystylism of Picasso, the moody brooding of Rothko, the impatience of Pollock, and the sensuous passion of Anaïs Nin. For this event, Renée Baker presents ICHOR BLACK for violin, cello, bass, and percussion, a comprovisation of composed structures, painted and graphic scores, and improvisation based on the opera The Baldwin Chronicles: Negro Ideologies.
Sudden Sound concerts feature leading artists in improvised music and the jazz avant-garde. This concert is presented as part of the Improvisers Exchange, a 2018–2019 initiative of the Center for Advanced Study.
