Research-Creation and the Alchemical Studio: An Experiment in Studious Drift
Join us for a talk by Dr. Tyson E. Lewis, Professor Art Education at the University of North Texas. His presentation creates a dialectical image in which the ancient practice of alchemy is juxtaposed next to the contemporary practice of research-creation. The mediation point between the two is the unusual space-time of the studio, which embodies an underlying drift in bodies, gestures, materials, and ideas that unites alchemical experimentation and research-creation. Dr. Lewis will highlight the importance of this convergence for interrupting and suspending dominant notions of learning prevalent in today’s schools and universities.
About the Speaker
Dr. Tyson E. Lewis is a Professor Art Education in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas. He has published widely on topics such as research-creation, critical pedagogy, critical phenomenology, aesthetic philosophy, critical theory, posthumanism, and antifascist education. In 2024, Dr. Lewis was included on the Stanford University/Elsevier list for the world’s Top 2% most-cited researchers in the world. He is author of many books, including Studious Drift: Movements and Protocols for a Postdigital Education and The Alchemy of Research-Creation, both co-authored with Peter Hyland. Currently, he sits on the executive committee for the Philosophy of Education Society and on the steering committee for the Art Education Research Institute and has served as the commentary editor for the journal Studies in Art Education.
