Mark Kostabi (United States, b. 1960)
Madonna, 1984
Oil on canvas
Gift of Rebecca Frankel Wilkinson
1996-14-1

In this painting, Kostabi juxtaposes a cash register with the figures of the Madonna and baby Jesus. The sickly-color of their skin could be a simple reference to how pigments change over time or the sentiment that everything in society, including religion and art, is for sale.
